Have you ever hidden away some cash and forgotten all about it, only to find it years later? Well, that’s Bill Wyckoff’s story, but instead of cash it was the 1937 Ford truck that he cruised in high school.
“Fifty five years ago, I parked my high school ride (a 1937 Ford) in an old barn behind my parent’s home,” Wyckoff told us. “I had pulled the motor for rebuild, but otherwise it was still complete. Time flies, and the truck sat in the old barn becoming a home for various critters. My oldest son had been after me for some time to start work on rebuilding the truck since we had done several such projects for my grandsons.
More went by until one Saturday my son said, ‘If we don’t do something about getting your truck out of the barn, it is going to fall down or catch on fire.’ That got me going, so we loaded up a trailer with tools and a compressor to retrieve the pickup in the barn.”
Wyckoff bought the truck in his sophomore year of high school for $200 and shot it yellow in the school’s auto body shop. In the early years an 85-hp flathead went in and was replaced by a 125-hp Merc, which was eventually replaced with something else. “I feel blessed that I still have the truck, and we can’t wait for it to be back on the road,” Hyckoff said. “It was last tagged in 1963, and the plate is still in the back window.”
Amazingly all four tires still held air! Bryan is Wyckoff’s son, and without his badgering and constant reminders of the squirreled away ’37 truck, it would most likely still be in the barn and home to countless varmints. So why did Wyckoff park his truck over five decades ago? Well, it seems he switched his daily driver over to a 1956 Chevy two-door hardtop. That ’56 is long gone, but at least he still has that ’37 truck that was hidden away and recently rediscovered, and just like the Wyckoff family we can’t wait to see it back on the road!
