This Road Legal 1982 Lancia Rally 037 Is Super Rare In America

Listed with Bring a Trailer, this classic sports car, based on the 1983 championship-winning World Rally car, even comes with a roll cage.

Lancia were one of the biggest names when it came to the World Rally Championship. In fact, they might still be the biggest name in the history of the WRC. And one of the greatest cars in the history of the sport is the Lancia Rally 037.

We all know the famous story of how the 037 beat the Audi Quattro in 1983. And now, one of the road going versions of this stunning rally car is up for sale on Bring a Trailer, one of a handful in the United States.

Getting To Know The 037

This particular 1982 037 is chassis 029 of around 260 examples made, combined with the rally variants. And it spent some time in Switzerland and Belgium in the early 1990s before ending up in the UK later in the decade. The car was then imported into the United States around seven years go.

The 037 became the last rear-wheel drive car to win the WRC title in 1983. And there are some iconic design features of this Lancia. These include the front and rear clamshells, double-bubble roof and the front air dam. This particular example is absent its rear bumper, which was more a characteristic of the Evolution II models from 1984 onwards.

A Raging Red Lancia

This particular 037 is in a gorgeous shade of red, one of the classic colors in which we can find a Lancia 037. The hood bulge, air scoops on each sail panel, rear spoiler and quad headlights are more recognizable 037 features, as are the round tail lamps.

Inside the 037 are a pair of Sparco racing seats in black cloth, with black carpeting lining the floors and the rear firewall of the car. A red painted roll cage matches neatly with the exterior color of the car.

Lancia Power Under The Hood

The interior gets completed with the three-spoke MOMO steering wheel and the Veglia Borletti instrumentation. Under the hood of the Lancia is a Fiat-Abarth DOHC inline-four engine that is of Evo II specification, a replacement of the original engine. The engine went through a rebuild by MRH Engineering of Kent, UK in 1998. Remarkably, this Lancia has just 24,000 miles showing on the clock, and only 800 of those have come under current ownership.

The car comes with an FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form, and this is a must-have for any fan of the great Lancia company.
