Muscle carThe 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport Was A Secret Weapon.

The Chevrolet Chevelle SS is considered to be one of the company’s greatest achievements. It truly helped define an era of cars that people still long for today. This iconic beast made its debut in 1964 and ended it over a decade later in 1977. However, arguably, the best model of the Chevrolet Chevelle is the one that was unleashed for the 1970 model year. Specifically, the 454 version.

The funny thing is that this swift road bully could not have existed before 1970. This is because GM limited engine displacements to 400 cubic inches for intermediate-size cars before that year. This made the engine used in the 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS the biggest on the market at that time.

The Chevrolet Chelleve SS Engine Is Insane:

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS is powered by a 7.4-liter Big Block ohv V8 engine. This hefty beast produces a max 450-hp at ,5600 rpm. It is also high in torque as it has a max of 500 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm. This was a big upgrade over the previous model. Chevy achieved this improvement by increasing the engine stroke.
When it comes to speeds, this ride can go from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.1 seconds. It can also go a quarter-mile in just 13.7 seconds at 103 miles per hour. This car has a top speed of 162 mph, according to fastestlaps.com.

This Is A Simple Classic:

One of the things that make this car stand out is its simple design. This may not appeal to everyone, particularly people who want more bells and whistles, but it was truly a product of its time. We must remember that the 1970s were before there was a great deal of work that went into the features. Chevrolet cared more about producing a powerful machine, and for that, we are thankful.

This car came standard with bench seats. There is a three-gauge cluster for the tach, speedometer, and clock. This cluster also had smaller gauges attached. You also got HVAC controls, a simple radio, and in true classic car fashion, a lighter, according to heacockclassic.com. There were also eight color options for the interior of the car. Some are common such as black and blue, but buyers could also choose things like saddle and gold. These colors were a great way to spice up a simple car.

The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport Was A Secret Weapon:

The 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS is not only a great car, this was the company’s secret weapon for the battle between itself, Ford, and Chrysler. At this time, there was some real competition and everyone wanted to be on top. It’s hard to say who won this war, but the fact that the Chevelle is generally mentioned more than its competitors of this time is telling. By many, this car is considered to be the muscle car of all muscle cars.

Chevrolet knew what they were doing with this one. Some cars are meant to last a generation, but this one has been an icon since its inception. The car world would not be the same without the Chevelle and fans can see influences from it in later cars produced by Chevy.

It should be noted that the company designed a concept for a new version of the Chevelle back in 2003, but as we all know, that car never went into production. However, there is talk of a new 2022 concept Chevelle. Also, Chevy filed for a trademark of the Chevelle nameplate back in 2013. So, does this mean we’ll someday get a new model for the Chevelle SS? We sure hope so, but until then, the 1970 version is pretty legit.
